O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she was promoted to the final 100th stage. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the third place again. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol straight away.
